Background
to the Project
Manor Farm, including the Barn, had been in local authority control since 1913, and a serious fire in 1928 had destroyed a large part of the Barn. The farm became redundant in 1989, when the farmer retired. In 1994 the owners at that time, North Yorkshire County Council, agreed to sell the Barn for £1 to a group dedicated to restoration. |

The
Friends of Poppleton Tithe Barn
The Friends of Poppleton Tithe Barn were formed in 1994 by the Poppleton Preservation Group, to manage the Tithe Barn Restoration Project, a scheme to restore the Barn and preserve it for the community. The Friends became a registered Charity, with objectives covering restoration, maintenance and use of the Barn. |
Raising
funds for restoration
Following a lengthy period of fund-raising, the Tithe Barn was awarded a grant of £171,500 by the Heritage Lottery Fund in 1998, later rising to £193,000. The Friends have achieved partnership funding of £79,000 from charitable trusts, local businesses, local authorities, landfill tax rebates etc, and raised an Endowment Fund of £20,000 from village pledges and fund-raising activities

Restoration
work
Work began in July 1999 and was completed in June 2000. The aim has been to preserve the character of the building, and to maintain its sixteenth century ambience, trying to retain as much of the original fabric as possible. The work has also been designed to minimise future maintenance costs, and to ensure disabled access to all parts of the building. |
