Useful links for exploring the family name
We are aware of at least three people in the UK who have been researching the family name of Poppleton in the past, who might be able to assist with possible links. Mr. R.B.Stancliffe, of 18 Redruth Drive, Normanton, West Yorkshire, WF6 2DL, England is interested in the Huddersfield area in the period up to 1830. Miss E.M Alty of 49 Grange St, St Albans, Herts AL3 5NA was researching the name Poppleton in York in the 18th and 19th centuries, and also Mrs. F.Keymer of 1 Westbrook Road, Blackheath, London SE3 0NS was looking for 18th century Poppletons anywhere in the country. Both of these may have useful information.
Nether and Upper Poppleton are four miles to the north west of York. You can find the villages by taking the A19 north west out of York, and turning left at the outer ring road towards Harrogate. Nether Poppleton is signed at the next junction. Alternatively take the A59 west out of York towards Harrogate and take the first turn right after the outer ring road, signed Upper Poppleton (and local station). For accommodation there is the Red Lion Inn and Motel, which is on the edge of Poppleton, on the Marston Moor side of the village. Their tel no is +44 (0) 1904 781141. Otherwise try the York tourism web site www.york-tourism.co.uk, as there are many other hotels and guesthouses in York.
