In May 2002 the Parish Council received a report, from a local arboriculturalist, on the condition of the tall lime tree near the Methodist Chapel on the village Green. The report stated that "Historical wounding on the main trunk at 2m & 4m to the north east is evident. This has resulted in open cavities along with callusing where the tree has attempted to close the wounds and compartmentalise any decay. Current inspection of these areas has shown the presence of decay fungi & major deterioration of the wood. This tree has now to be regarded as a borderline case as far as major trunk failure is concerned. It is recommended that the stage has now been reached where this tree should be marked for removal and re-placement planting undertaken." The village Green is part of the Conservation Area and all the trees on the Green are subject to Tree Preservation Orders. The Parish Council applied to the City of York Council to have the lime tree felled. Following a site visit by a Council officer permission was granted. The lime tree was felled on Thursday/Friday 10/11 October. The felled lime tree has been replaced with a 3 metre tall Tilia x Euchlora (Crimean linden). |
