_____1ST YORK (POPPLETON)
SCOUTS_____
HOMEPAGE
1st York (Poppleton) Scouts meet every
Friday night during term time.
(See links for specific details.)
Our aim is to support the development of
young people as they move from being a
child to an adult. This includes
general skill as listed below but also to provide a
forum for them to demonstrate specific skills,
Model Making,
Art, Drama, or Sports Ability before their peers.
By definition we see a child as being a
passenger in life, outside in the real
world at risk of becoming part of the
problem. We see an adult as being part of the
solution, able to go about their business,
travelling whatever the infrastructure,
confident in their ability and appreciation
of the risks around them. An ability to:
work on their own, be part of a team and
assist others who have, to one degree or
another been overwhelmed by the situation they
find themselves in.
Our aim is to provide the facilities that
allow individuals to develop the skills
and appreciation of the realities of life
such that they can live up to these ideals.
In order to support this work we aim to
give young people the opportunity to get out
into the sorts of environment that could, in
later life, put them at risk. The countryside
late at night, Up in the hills, Along the
Coast, Caves, Rock climbing, Camping
miles from anywhere. The hope we harbour is
that by crating as safe an environment as
possible while letting individuals experience
the risks of the world we give them an
opportunity to become wise to the dangers
and aware of the skills they need to survive.
We then provide opportunities to learn and
practise using those skills: Map reading,
Building Fires, First Aid, Building Shelters,
Cooking, Planning to be Out and About, Using
Communication Facilities, Teamwork.
If in the future it provides a background of
information that allows a individual, with the
family in a car stuck in snow on open
moorland, to make the right decisions that
allow everyone to survive, we will have
succeeded.
